Nu's Flash 10/28/2011

In this edition of the Nu’s Flash, there are five new things to report. First off, the chapter is pleased to announce its second consecutive Homecoming win! The theme for this year was “Tame the Tigers” in preparation for the NC State vs. Clemson game. The Brothers paired up with the ladies of Kappa Delta, a sorority that was chartered at the University last year, and dominated just about every event during the week. Commander Taylor Moseley and Kappa Delta Homecoming Chairman Allison Boyette were honored with the Homecoming trophy on the field at halftime during the exciting win over Clemson. The first-place finish meant an end to what became a very time-consuming and hectic week. Some notable stories include how the Chapter persevered when three hand-made tiger mascots were “cat napped” from our float by another fraternity. After rescuing our tigers and treating the situation with conduct becoming of knights, we were able to place first in the homecoming float competition. The week also included a visit from alumnus Tommy Kane (BT 1088) who was filming an episode for his show The ACC Road Trip. The Chapter is looking forward to seeing the upcoming episode which should feature the Chapter and the University in a very positive light.

Secondly, the Brothers would like to encourage all alumni to maintain an open flow of communication with the Chapter. If you are going to be in Raleigh for any reason, please feel free to contact myself by phone (704-617-5887) or email (rrmaclat@ncsu.edu). If you want to set up a house tour, to ask for the Chapter’s help with something, or to let the Chapter know about an upcoming event, please don't hesitate to contact the Chapter. Last week, I know there was an event where one Beta Tau alumnus was giving a speech on campus and the Chapter was not informed about it until the last moment. If the Chapter had been better informed, we would have shown up in mass to hear the speech and support our alumni base. I would love for the Chapter to participate in any and all events where our alumni are making a difference.

Thirdly, the Brothers would like to ask the alumni if they have any connections with pig cookers. The Chapter has great interest in having a permanent pig cooker at the house so we can host various rush/social/tailgate events for large groups of people. If any alumni have an old pig cooker they are willing to part ways with (either by donating it or selling it to the Chapter), Beta Tau would certainly appreciate the gesture.

Fourthly, the Chapter would like to announce the alumni Rush event for the spring semester. The event will most likely occur the last week of January or the first week of February. The tentative theme for the night is “Steaks and Stogies.” In other words, we would like to grill some steaks and smoke some cigars at the house. The event would be completely free for alumni; so please come support your Brothers. In terms of the layout of the event, it will probably be similar to the Rush event we hosted at the beginning of this year; where alumni are free to meet and greet with Brothers and rushees and will then conclude with alumni talking about what it means to be a Sigma Nu. As a side note, our alumni event this past semester may have been our most successful event during Rush so we would like to continue to have a good turnout. More details about the date/time will be forthcoming. Please make all efforts to attend.

Lastly, I just wanted to briefly comment on the issue of Brotherhood and having a house. Being a Brother in Sigma Nu for three years now, I have seen how much the Beta Tau Chapter has progressed. Before getting a house, the Chapter felt more like an academic club. We would have Chapter meetings on campus and would occasionally have philanthropies as well as “Brotherhood” events that may consist of having a meal together. I barely knew several Brothers beyond a first and last name basis simply because we didn’t spend much, if at all, time together. After only having a house for one semester, I have seen a huge change in the internal composition and collectiveness of the Chapter. The house is the catalyst for Brotherhood. By living in close proximity with each other, Brothers are forced to get to know one another and hang out on a regular basis. I have come to find out that while having parties and socials are fun, some of the best times we spend as a Brotherhood consist of Brothers simply “hanging out” with each other. I know my favorite activity at the house is when a group of Brothers sit out on the deck and listen to country music while smoking cigars. It’s small events like these that build lasting memories and strong friendships. I can’t wait to see how the Chapter develops more traditions and continues to become an even stronger Brotherhood in the future.

Nu's Flash 6/21/2011

Happy first official day of summer everyone! In this edition of the Nu’s Flash, there are four new things to report. First off, the chapter is proud to announce that it earned one of the highest GPA's among fraternities with a 3.025. The chapter really buckled down and hit the books hard this past semester and the cumulative GPA certainly reflects that effort. The full NCSU Grade Report for the Spring of 2011 can be found by clicking here.

Secondly, Sigma Nu is pleased to announce the creation of three scholarships for the Fall of 2011. The first-prize scholarship is the $300 Sigma Nu Gentleman’s Scholarship. The other two scholarships are Sigma Nu Collegiate Men’s Scholarships each worth $100. Scholarship winners will be chosen based on the applicant's dedication to leadership, academic excellence, and the three guiding principles of Sigma Nu; Love, Honor, and Truth. Eligible applicants are any male, incoming freshman who is going to be enrolled at NC State University in the Fall of 2011. All applications are due by August 1st. The applications are available under the FALL RUSH 2011 tab or by clicking here. Please contact Recruitment Chairman, Brandon Denny at bhdenny@ncsu.edu with any additional questions about the scholarships or Rush in general.

Thirdly, Beta Tau is in great need of donations as we get ready to move into our temporary house at 2409 W. Fraternity Court, Raleigh, NC 27606 on the old Greek Court. If you have any old furniture that is just taking up space or is just unused in your house and is in somewhat acceptable condition (not completely falling apart), we would graciously take it off of your hands. In addition, if you have any awesome old pictures/composites, memorabilia, or trophies, we would love to display all of that stuff in the house. So if you have any items you wish to donate, please email me at rrmaclat@ncsu.edu and we can set up a time closer to when school starts back up in August when some Brothers can swing by and pick them up. Just as a side note, we currently are having the interior somewhat renovated this summer (new carpet, new ceilings, painting/patching walls, etc) in order to make the house somewhat presentable. We certainly look forward to having our first chapter house since re-colonizing and being able to have alumni gatherings on a more regular basis.

Lastly, Sigma Nu would like to congratulate alumnus Tommy Kane (BT 1088) for winning a Southeast Regional Emmy Award this past weekend! The award was presented by the Atlanta/Southeast Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in a ceremony in Atlanta. Tommy won the Emmy in the category of "Outstanding Achievement - On-Camera Talent - Reporter - Sports.” For those of you who didn’t meet him at the Oyster Roast or read about him in one of the previous Nu’s Flashes or the last issue of the Delta, Tommy hosts the Emmy Award and multiple Telly Award winning ACC ROAD TRIP on Raycom Sports / ACC Network. He also reported for The ATL Sports Experience on COMCAST ON-DEMAND as well as other local shows this past year. Way to go Tommy, and keep up the excellent work!

Nu's Flash 5/27/2011

In this edition of the Nu’s Flash, there are six new things to report. First off, Beta Tau would like to recap our St. Baldrick’s: Shave to Save event. The event, which occurred on April 7th, has won the Deborah S. Moore Service Award which is a prestigious award given for NC State’s best service project of the year. In total, the event raised $38,714 for pediatric cancer research and had over 100 shavees. Additionally, 20 individuals were registered in the national bone marrow registry Be The Match, and 3 children were sponsored on behalf of Make a Child Smile! Special thanks go to Brother Dre Antono for organizing the event, Amanda Antono (Dre’s sister) for securing necessary materials/resources, and all of the shavees/donors; especially Media Two Interactive for their tremendous participation in the event.

Secondly, Sigma Nu would like congratulate Brothers Taylor Moseley and Zac Fagan. Brother Moseley was recently voted Brother of the Semester while newly-initiated Brother Zac Fagan was voted Candidate of the Semester. Moseley, the Chapter’s Eminent Commander, has done wonders in all aspects of Chapter management. He has handled adversity, facilitated successful events, and constantly pushed the Chapter to be better than the sum of its parts. Meanwhile, Candidate Class President Fagan led his pledge Brothers to numerous accomplishments. Fagan helped lead the Chapter to its third straight win at Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash and was instrumental in the successful outcome of the St. Baldrick’s event. The entire Chapter is thankful for the hard work and dedication both of these men have shown over this past semester. Congratulations to both of them!

Thirdly, Beta Tau would like to congratulate the newest Brothers of Sigma Nu. Brothers Brady, Fagan, Fowler, Mayberry, and Roberts were all initiated late last month. It will be interesting to see how these newest members will continue to contribute to the Chapter in the future. In the meantime, I believe that each and every one of these men deserves a strong handshake and a pat on the back for this major accomplishment.

Fourthly, the Chapter would like to announce that it will officially be moving onto Greek Court once again. The fraternity is set to move into Sigma Chi’s old house until the new Chapter house is completed. Please feel free to stop by and hang out with some of the 20+ Brothers that will be living there. Having a house will be a new experience for all of the current Brothers and should really help up us improve our Brotherhood and Rush. In addition, we will be able to have more alumni events because we now have a legitimate place to gather. So look out for some more emails about those events next semester! In other news, we hope that all alumni who were able to attend this year’s Oyster Roast had a great time!

Fifthly, Sigma Nu would like to wish Brother Dre Antono good luck on his summer-long expedition across the country. Dre will be biking across the US with Bike & Build. Bike & Build is a program that strives to raise money and spread the word about the affordable housing problem that exists everywhere. Each participant is required to fundraise over $4000 before the start of the trip, and spend the summer biking and building houses with affordable housing organizations across the country. The trip started in Jacksonville, Florida on May 18 and doesn’t end until the group gets to Monterey, California on August 3rd. You can follow Dre on his epic quest by following him on his Tumblr blog, “The Adventures of BrightShorts."

Lastly, Beta Tau would like to congratulate the newest Sigma Nu alumni. Brothers Justin Bell, Kirk Bork, Jordan Brown, James Comstock, Gerald Fowler, Zack Harris, Andrew Naples, Dennis Sade, Braxton Smith, Ian Staten, and Zach Tucker were all a part of the largest graduating class from NC State in its long history. These Knights, who were instrumental in building the Chapter that we have today, are all great Brothers and young men. We all wish them the best and know with full certainty that they will succeed in all of their future endeavors.

Nu's Flash 4/4/2011

In this edition of the Nu’s Flash, there are four new things to report. First off, Beta Tau would like to announce its winning of Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash for the third year in a row. On Sunday, April 3rd, the Chapter successfully competed and won in its third Anchor Splash since coming back onto campus. For those of you who don’t know, Anchor Splash is a daylong event held at the campus pool to raise money for Service for Sight. Other Greek and non Greek groups donate money to participate in competitive water-based events including swimming races, a belly flop contest, Save the Mermaid and a synchronized swimming contest. The Chapter would like to thank all of the Brothers and Candidates who participated this year to lead us to another philanthropy three-peat (Sigma Nu three-peated in Delta Zeta’s Turtle Tug earlier in 2010).

Secondly, Beta Tau would like to send one final St. Baldrick’s update. Since the last Nu’s Flash was published on March 20th, the philanthropy event has raised another $12,000 and gained almost another 30 shavees bringing the total to over $27,716 raised and 95 shavees; making it one of the largest Greek philanthropies. The individual event takes place this Thursday, April 7th at 4 pm on Harris Field. So if you are in the Raleigh area on Thursday, we have an alumni lunch that day at Player’s Retreat as well, then come and hang out with some of your Brothers for some good music and good times. There will also be a follow up event at Sammy’s Tap and Grill on Avent Ferry Boulevard after the event. Click here to donate and learn more about the event.

Thirdly, Beta Tau would like to announce some promising news. Until the new Greek Court house is built in the near future, Beta Tau has been working hard to find an interim fraternity house. Although it has not been set in stone, Sigma Nu has been in talks with Greek Life about acquiring Sigma Chi’s current house on Greek Court until the new house is built in the next year or two. While it is not a permanent solution whatsoever, a concrete place to call a “house” will certainly do wonders for the brotherhood, recruitment, and social aspects of the Chapter.

Lastly, Beta Tau would like to turn attention to the Oyster Roast. Happening in less than a month, time is running out to register for this year’s Oyster Roast. With record amounts of alumni signed up to attend, this year is certainly not the year to miss out. If you are interested in attending, please fill out and mail the registration form found here http://www.ncsusigmanu.com/registration-form with payment to Oyster Roast Chairman Rick Tate by April 20th. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact myself (rrmaclat@ncsu.edu) or Rick Tate (rick.tate@dhhs.nc.gov).

Nu's Flash 3/20/2011

In this edition of the Nu’s Flash, there are four new things to report. First off, I would like to highlight the accomplishments of the fraternity intramural basketball team. Headed by team captain Adam McCoy and Intramural Chairman Bishal Johal, the Knights enjoyed a 3-1-1 record. The Knights won their first three games of the season with scores of 63-31, 61-11, and 44-29, beating Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Gamma Rho, and Farmhouse respectively. The Knights ended the regular season with a hard-fought 47-47 tie against Kappa Sigma. In the quarterfinal round of the intramural playoffs, the fifth-ranked Knights suffered a tough loss to fourth-ranked Kappa Sigma 54-50 to end the season. I just wanted to congratulate the men on a strong season that included an impressive 18.6 average point differential. The Knights look forward to next spring as they will bring back all players except Brother Braxton Smith who is graduating.

Secondly, I would like the reemphasize the Chapter’s upcoming philanthropy event: Shave to Save. To this point, Sigma Nu with the HUGE help of other participants have managed to raise close to $15,500 (already beating our total of just under $14,000 from last year) for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation in its effort to conquer kids with cancer. Brother and Community Service/Philanthropy Chairman Dre Antono has done a miraculous job in organizing and promoting this event around campus and the Raleigh area. The individual event where the 64 individual shavees, including numerous women, will shave their head will occur at Harris Field on Wednesday, April 7th at 4:00 pm. In addition to the head shavings spectacle, the Sammy’s Tap and Grill “Wolf Wagon” and the band KinGator will be on hand to provide additional entertainment. To donate and learn more about the event, click here.

Thirdly, numerous Brothers in the Chapter are still looking for summer internship positions. Several brothers, including myself, are looking for any kind of paid or unpaid internships for this upcoming summer. If any alumnus has information regarding internships in the field of sport management, management, or mechanical engineering, please let me know at rrmaclat@ncsu.edu as soon as possible so I can disseminate the information accordingly. We respect your time and deeply appreciate any information you are willing to provide.

Lastly, I would like to end this Nu’s Flash with another alumni story. Brother Elias Ballew recently sent me a picture, which is depicted below, of his father Winslow Ballew (BT 924) with three other alumni. The men in the picture are (from left to right): Chuck Bolt (BT 896), Kearney Davis (sitting) (BT 923), Mike Olive (BT 921), and Winslow Ballew (BT 924). I found this picture interesting not only because of its interesting setting, but also because of the people in it. The picture appears to be of the result of a rugged quest in the Nantahala National Forest. On another note, this picture is of even more interest to me because I personally know the sons of Mike Olive and Winslow Ballew. Winslow’s son Elias (BT 1354), Beta Tau’s current Candidate Marshal, was my pledge Brother while Mike Olive’s son Aaron Olive is a resident of mine at University Towers where I am a Resident Assistant. That fact just goes to show you how small the world is and how NC State pride runs deep in families. It’s cool to think that two friends I have met in my time here at State have fathers that know each other really well too. On a completely random and final note, I found out that there is a William Kearney Davis Jr., (BT 0004) who was a Beta Tau founder in 1895 as well as the aforementioned Kearny Williams Davis (BT 923) almost a hundred years later. That fact just poses another question, is that evidence of a family relationship or just a coincidence?

Nu's Flash 3/7/2011

In this edition of the Nu’s Flash, there are three new things to report. First off, I would like to begin with some general housekeeping business. I would like to inform all alumni about their website profile privacy settings. You can change what information is viewable to the general public by logging in to your account at https://ncsusigmanu.celect.org/site/login. You can then click on the “edit profile” button located on the left side of the screen. From there you can click on each of the blue tabs located at the top of the screen and edit your profile information as well as the information’s privacy setting. For example, if you want to change who can view your email address, click on the blue “contact” tab and then click either “public,” “members-only,” or “private” on the drop down menu on the right side of the screen to designate who can view that information. If you have any questions about logging in or your profile privacy settings, feel free to email me at rrmaclat@ncsu.edu.

Secondly, I would like to highlight the work of Beta Tau alumni and musician Jason Reischel. Reischel graduated from NC State (BT 1194) in 1998. He spent a few years working in Research Triangle Park before he decided to move to NYC to pursue music full time in 2004. Jason has toured the US and the UK both as a solo artist, and as part of My Cousin, The Emperor. He has released 2 solo albums, and 1 album and 2 EPs (extended plays) with My Cousin, The Emperor. The band’s new EPs “The Subway EPs: Vol. I & II” will be released on March 29th. You will be able to download them on iTunes, so show some support for one of your Brothers! You can also visit the band’s website at http://mycousintheemperor.bandcamp.com/ or check out their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/mycousintheemperor. My Cousin, The Emperor will be playing in downtown Raleigh at The Pour House which is located at 224 South Blount Street, this Wednesday, March 9th at 9 pm.

I would like to end this Nu’s Flash with another alumni story. This particular story is about Beta Tau great and very-active alumnus Monroe Holland “Buz” Phillips Jr. “Buz” as he is called by all that know him, was a Beta Tau back in the early 1960’s and today is the most visible face of the alumni to the active chapter. Buz has devoted a large amount of time to the active fraternity as he attends nearly every Chapter meeting and alumni event. He knows all of the active Brothers by name and is definitely considered “one of the guys.” It was only recently however that I realized that no one in the Chapter, including myself, knew the origins of the “Buz” nickname as everyone has always just called the man Buz. I recently got the scoop from the living legend himself and this is what I found. Buz was born Monroe Holland Phillips Jr and was called Holland by his father early in life. At age 2 or 3, his name transformed to “Holland Junior.” Evidently, he did not like the name “Holland Junior” and the name “Monroe” was never an option (because of his father’s occupancy of the name) so he one day started calling himself “Buz.” Why did Monroe Holland Phillips Jr., choose the name “Buz” of all names? The answer to the question may be an enigma, even to Buz himself. According to his belief, Buz picked the nickname from a 1940’s comic book, or “funny papers” as they use to call them, character named Buz Sawyer, spelled with one Z. As an aside, the comic strip was created during World War II and starred the adventurous John “Buz” Sawyer who flew as an ace Navy fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater. While the origin of the “Buz” nickname may be uncertain, the lasting impact and numerous contributions Buz has had on the Beta Tau Chapter are clear. If Beta Tau ever had an Alumni Hall of Fame, which it should, Buz would be at the top of the list.

Nu's Flash 2/27/2011

In this edition of the Nu’s Flash, there are five new things to report. First off, the chapter would like to invite any alumni in the Raleigh area on this Thursday, March 3rd to attend the monthly alumni luncheon at Players Retreat on Hillsborough Street. Lunch usually starts around 11:40 am. It is a Beta Tau tradition and ALWAYS a good time. We hope to see a lot of people there.

Secondly, Beta Tau would like to thank alumnus Ashley Morris (BT 650) for his picture contributions. New photos have been added to the alumni event pictures tab on the website. The photos are from last month’s alumni luncheon, last year’s Friday night dinner before the Oyster Roast, and 2004’s inaugural Friday night dinner. If any alumnus has old photos they would like to share with the Chapter, please email them to me. The Chapter would love to see them! Click here for alumni event photos.

Thirdly, the Chapter would like to thank the beautiful ladies of Kappa Delta sorority for an awesome time last Thursday, February 24th. With the help of Social Chairman Jordan Brown, Sigma Nu and Kappa Delta had their second event together this school year at the 101 Lounge in downtown Raleigh. The theme of the mixer was 80’s Rave and both groups were properly dressed for the part. The night went so well that even when one of the shuttle buses broke down, it couldn’t damper the night’s mood as numerous Brothers stepped up by either paying for taxis for numerous people or by personally driving other Brothers and Kappa Deltas until everyone got home safely. This night just goes to show that as a Sigma Nu, responsibility and brotherhood truly go hand in hand. Sigma Nu looks forward to mixing with the ladies of Kappa Delta again in the future.

Fourthly, the new candidates will have their website profiles updated and edited by this Friday. You can check out their biographies and pictures as well as shoot them an email congratulating them on their excellent choice in deciding to pledge the best fraternity in the nation. These men are the future of the fraternity, so I feel like everyone should get to know them. Click here to browse the candidates' profiles.

Lastly, I would like to end this Nu’s Flash by talking about the relationship of Beta Tau and its Chapter house. Ever since the beginning, Beta Tau has been blessed to have not only a great Chapter, but a great Chapter house. The Beta Tau founders described their initial house as “a magnificent old residence situated in a large grove near the College.” Since then, Beta Tau has had numerous residences around Raleigh. With the help of numerous alumni including Ashley Morris (BT 650), Wilton “Sandy” Carter Jr. (BT 704), Gerald “Spec” Hawkins (BT 512), Arthur “Art” Latimer (593), and Monroe Holland “Buz” Phillips Jr. (BT 634), I have been tracking the progression of Beta Tau from house to house. My history of the Beta Tau chapter house begins in the 1930’s (mainly because I can’t find any information about earlier houses), with the house at 1301 Hillsborough Street (now with an address on Ashe Avenue). According to the website I researched, it is believed that the house was “built for the family of Fabius Briggs, a son of Thomas H. Briggs, the founder of Briggs Hardware. The Fabius Briggs family lived at 1301 Hillsborough Street until around 1927. By 1929, the Great Depression brooded over the city, and in 1932 the Raleigh Building and Loan Association acquired the house through foreclosure. It likely spent a time unoccupied, and was eventually rented to a Raleigh lawyer, and then to Sigma Nu fraternity in 1934 for ten years. By 1944, the once palatial residence had been humbled and abused by its tenants. It had lost its innocence, status, and shine.” It sounds like Sigma Nu had a great time in the house if you catch my drift. Since the house was sold, businesses have been erected in front of the house, destroying the front porch depicted in the photos below. The house is still standing today (barely), and is in great need of repair. Continuing on with the Beta Tau Chapter house progression and history, upon the return of the Chapter in 1947-48 (after WWII), Sigma Nu rented several rooms above the old Varsity Theater on Hillsborough, the space is still there. Sigma Nu then rented a house on Chamberlain Street for about a year or so. The Chamberlain house is still standing and was depicted in a picture that hung on the wall at the next house, the beloved 1620 Hillsborough Street house. The Chapter moved into the house around 1949 or 1950 and remained until it was torn down in the mid to late 1960’s. As far as I know, Sigma Nu has been located in the Greek Village ever since. As you can see, a functioning Chapter house has always been an integral part of this fraternity, and I hope we can continue this strong Beta Tau tradition in the future by being the first fraternity with a house built in the new Greek Village. Pictures of the 1301 Hillsborough Street house in 1941 and today are depicted below.

Nu's Flash 2/22/2011

In this edition of the Nu’s Flash there are five new things to report. First off, Beta Tau would like to show off its new look. Over the last week, each Beta Tau Brother who had his composite picture taken has had the picture uploaded to his chapter profile. You can check out the pictures by clicking on the Members tab. In order for active Brothers to better put names to faces in preparation for the Oyster Roast, the active chapter urges alumni to upload their own pictures to their profiles on the website if they have not already done so by following the listed steps below. If you do not have a picture of yourself, we will be sure to take one for you at the Oyster Roast.

1. Log in to your account at https://ncsusigmanu.celect.org/site/login. If you forgot your password, click on the “I forgot my password” button to have it sent to your email.

2. Once logged in, click on the “edit profile” button that has the pencil icon which is located on the left side of the screen.

3. Click on the blue tab labeled “Profile Pictures” on the right side of the screen.

4. Click “add new picture” on the right side of the screen and upload a picture of yourself. You can edit other sections of your profile by clicking on one of the other blue tabs.

Secondly, Beta Tau would like to thank Brothers Michael Quade (BT 1198), Ronald Sylvester (BT 1236), and Wilton “Sandy” Carter Jr. (BT 704). Thanks to these Brothers, Beta Tau has received more photos for the alumni photos section on the chapter website. Beta Tau now has pictures from the 1890’s, 1940’s, 1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s, and 1990’s. We would like to see any 1950’s pictures that are available as well as more 1960’s and 1980’s photos. Click here to view the photos.

Thirdly, I would like to highlight the hard work and dedication of Brother Ashley Morris (BT 650) in his effort to make this year’s Oyster Roast, the best one ever. This year, Morris has been recruiting many of his Brothers from the early 1960’s to return to this year’s Oyster Roast and Friday Night Dinner. The first Friday Night Dinner was held in 2003 thanks to the work of Brothers Art Latimer (BT 593) and Alec Purcell (BT 592) to be held in conjunction with the Annual Beta Tau Oyster Roast. They never spoke live on the phone, but corresponded back and forth via e-mail, with their goal to be to get as many Brothers that were initiated between the years of 1952 and 1962 back for a “special reunion.” Their vision and hard work has paid tremendous dividends. Brother Morris was in attendance at the first dinner and knew that it was the beginning of something “special” that would endure and grow over the years. Now, eight years later, with the ninth Dinner just two months away, the event has grown to include more recent initiates, as well as current Chapter Brothers, with Buz Phillips (BT 634) and Steve Henderson (BT 618) providing the “boots on the ground” in Raleigh to assist with the coordination. This year promises to be the biggest and best Friday Night Dinner with our additional focus being those Brothers initiated between the years of 1961 and 1965. Morris has concentrated on his 1961 Fall Pledge Class, and is hopeful that a minimum of 15 will return this year, making it the first time (probably since the night of initiation in January 1962) that such a large group of them will be together. Click here for the Oyster Roast registration form.

Fourthly, I would like to update the story I posted in the last edition of the Nu’s Flash about the “old men” story. After posting the story, Brother Rob Saunders (BT 858) emailed me and told me that Beta Tau was even more deeply embedded in the story than I at first noticed. Saunders revealed that the Leader of the Pack awarded to Brothers Little and Clark was presented by the President of the Alumni Association that year by Saunder’s father, Marcellus Garnett Saunders (BT 280)who graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1936. That fact is ironic because Brothers Clark and Little were actually receiving an award not only from a Beta Tau alumnus, but also from a person who was around the same age of the people they were impersonating, “old cheerleaders from 1929 and 30.” It seems like it was just meant to be.

Lastly, I would like to end this Nu’s Flash with another story from an alumnus that has an interesting historical timeline and a NCAA college football trivia fact or two. This story comes to me from Brother Wilton “Sandy” Carter Jr., (BT 704). Brother Carter recently emailed me a picture with a story about his father and Beta Tau alumnus Wilton Carter Sr., (BT 346). The picture, which is depicted below, is from 1941. Carter Sr., was a member of the Wolfpack football team from 1937 to 1941 (co-captain in 1941) back in the days when a big player on the line weighed about 230 lbs and players wore leather helmets with no face gaurds. Carter Sr., weighed in at about 170 lbs and played center for a single-wing formation. The picture shows the pregame coin toss at old Riddick Stadium on November 22nd, 1941 in a game against the then number one ranked and undefeated Duke team. The game was played just 2 weeks before the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th, 1941. Carter Sr., is the NC State player on the far left and Wolfpack teammate Bob Cathy is on his right. The Duke player in the picture is team captain Bob Barnett who was the 6'3" center. In short, Duke won the game 55-6. NCSU went on to a 4-5-1 record that year but they did, however; beat Carolina on October 31st in Chapel Hill, 13 to 7. That victory marked the first time NCSU had beaten Carolina since 1932. In regards to Duke’s season, they went on to play in the Rose Bowl on January 1st, 1942. But because of the concerns that the West Coast may be attacked by Japan, the Rose Bowl was moved to Wallace Wade stadium in Durham. This change marked the only time that the Rose Bowl has ever been played outside of Pasadena, California. In the end, Duke lost to Oregon 13-7. Go Pack!

Nu's Flash 2/09/2011

In this edition of the Nu’s Flash, there are six new things to report. First off, Beta Tau would like to present the new Spring 2011 candidate class. The men were formally introduced tonight, February 9th, at our traditional "Rock Ceremony" that takes place at the rock dedicated to Sigma Nu in the Court of North Carolina. These men will be instructed by Candidate Marshal Elias Ballew on their journey to becoming Knights in the Legion of Honor. The following is the current candidate roster:

Phillip Lee Brady, Mechanical Engineering, Freshman

Zachary Case Fagan, Sport Management, Freshman (Legacy, Clemson University, Father)

Michael David Fowler, Criminology, Freshman (Legacy, North Carolina State University, Brother)

Brooks Franklin Mayberry, Civil Engineering, Freshman
Bobby Gray Roberts III, Professional Golf Management, Freshman

Secondly, Beta Tau would like to announce our intentions for our Spring philanthropy. On April 7th, 2011 starting at 4:00 pm on Harris Field (the corner of Dan Allen Drive and Cates Avenue), Sigma Nu is hosting its 2nd annual St. Baldrick’s Shaving event, where Brothers and other participants shave their head to help raise money for childhood cancer. Last year, Sigma Nu, with the help of other participants, raised close to $14,000 and have a goal of raising $50,000 this year. Looking to improve on last year’s turnout and donations, we have added the following additions to this year’s event. First of all, we will have KinGator providing music throughout the event on Harris Field. We will also be designing an event shirt that can be pre-ordered, and sold at the event (while supplies last). Additionally, campus organizations (clubs, Greek Life, residence halls, etc.) will have the opportunity to create teams of Shavees to compete for a prize. More information regarding the event and donations can be found here.

Thirdly, a new alumni photo section of the website has been added. Brothers MacLatchie and Brenton have searched far and wide to scavenge up some old photos of alumni during their days at Beta Tau. The photos have been placed in roughly chronological order and were found from numerous sources including old historical documents such as The Delta, Facebook, and general alumni donations. We really want to preserve these pictures by putting them up on the website and showing how much fun it was to be a Beta Tau in the past and how it continues to be in the present. If you are an alumni and have more pictures you would like to share, please email them to me at rrmaclat@ncsu.edu or talk to me on Facebook. Click here for the alumni picture slideshow.

Fourthly, Beta Tau would like to congratulate Brother Brendan Lukasik for being selected to join the prestigious Order of 30 and 3. The Order of 30 and 3 is composed of 33 students (both men and women), eleven from each the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. Students apply in the fall of their sophomore year. The Order of Thirty and Three is unique to N.C. State University and was founded in 1931 as a secret society to “accomplish the greatest good” and promote the best interest of the University through cooperative efforts. Members are selected based upon their academic credentials, extracurricular involvement, and commitment to the University community. Brother Lukasik joins fellow Brother Christopher Brenton, who served as the Order’s former president, as the second active Sigma Nu to gain membership into this former secret society. To put this achievement in perspective, NC State had 25, 246 undergraduate students in the Fall of 2010. This means that only one student in every 765 is admitted into this particular organization.

Fifthly, Beta Tau would like to congratulate alumnus Thomas “Tommy” Kanes (BT 1088) for being honored by Raycom Sports with a 2011 Midsouth Regional Emmy Award for ‘ACC Football Road Trip’ (featured in the Winter 2011 Delta). Kane is hoping that the appeal of ACC Road Trip will extend not only to collegiate but also alumni Brothers. “With a show like this, especially with so much of it connected through the Internet, the more exposure we get the better,” he says. “Sigma Nu Brothers can be a big help in spreading the word. If Sigma Nus could pop it up on their Facebook page and pass it on to friends it would be an amazing way to get the word out.” Click here to see the article in the Winter 2011 Delta.

Lastly, I would like to end this particular Nu’s Flash with a bit of Beta Tau nostalgia. This story comes to me from Beta Tau alumnus Buell Little Jr. (BT 849). When I was looking through Facebook for alumni pictures, I stumbled across a rather odd one and noticed that Brother Little was tagged in it. I asked him about the origin of the picture, which is depicted below, and he provided me with this rather funny story. In 1975, Buell Little and Brother Billy Clark (BT 857) dressed as a couple of old men, went to the first football game of the year, and proceeded to the cheerleading stand in front of the student section. The men asked if a couple of “old cheerleaders” from 1929 & 30 could lead a cheer for old time sake. They had just hoped to get their picture in the Technician and they ended getting more than they had ever bargained for. At the next home game, the cheerleaders asked where the “cheerleaders” from the last game were. For the rest of the season, Brothers Clark and Little had the run of the pregame cheerleading and ended up being on national television, traveling to the Peach Bowl and Michigan State, and even led the team out of the tunnel one game. The story gets even better when, around homecoming time, the University decided to deviate from its traditional homecoming queen selection to more of a unisex school spirit competition called “Leader of the Pack.” Needless to say the duo entered the contest and won. The group was in pictures in newspapers as far away as Japan, and on the front page of the Atlanta Journal. For some reason, it embarrassed the University to such a degree that the next year they changed it back to a traditional Homecoming Queen. The group wasn’t even allowed to come back and crown her. Eventually, NC State switched back to the “Leader of the Pack” selection which continues to this day. So in a way, you can say that Sigma Nu at NC State has been “leading the pack” in numerous ways from being the first fraternity on campus to winning spirit competitions. Maybe we can see Brothers Clark and Little in costume on one last “old cheerleaders” comeback tour at the Oyster Roast?

Nu's Flash 1/30/2011

In this edition of the Nu's Flash there are a few important things to note. Beta Tau is in the midst of Spring Rush 2011 and the chapter is recruiting full force. The upcoming events for this week include a trip to the Knights Play driving range in Raleigh on Monday, January 31st from 9-11 pm. Later this week on Thursday, February 3rd we have our traditional monthly alumni luncheon at Player's Retreat on Hillsborough Street. Following the luncheon, on the same day, the chapter is hosting a brother-alumni cookout from 6-9 pm at the home of Brothers Bork, Smith, Bell, and Harris at 2400 Trailwood Hills Drive, Raleigh NC 27603. ALL ALUMNI ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.

Secondly, the active chapter of Beta Tau would like to ask all alumni for any recommendations of quality gentlemen they may know at NC State. All recommendations should either be forwarded to Recruitment Chairman Christopher Brenton (dcbrento@ncsu.edu) or be completed online by filling out a Prospective Member Questionaire on the chapter website.

Thirdly, for the Fall 2010 semester, the active Beta Tau Brothers are proud of achieving a 2.98 chapter GPA. The GPA is one of the highest among all fraternities at State and is above the All Fraternity (2.69), All Men's (2.92), and All Greek (2.94) averages. The chapter would also like to recognize the 20 Brothers who achieved the Dean's List for the Fall 2010 semester.

Lastly, Beta Tau would like to thank alumni Charles Fox (BT 855), President of Fox Music House in Charleston, SC. Brother Fox pledged $50 each month to the chapter for life. The total of $600 per year is a huge help in getting the Beta Tau Chapter House project up and running. Fox Music has been a trusted part of the musical community in Charleston, SC since 1928. Today, the company not only serves the Greater Charleston Area, but also Columbia, South of Savannah, and North of Myrtle Beach. "From the individual to the largest churches, the beginning student to entire school systems, and every musician in between, FOX MUSIC HOUSE provides equipment and service for every venue."

Nu's Flash 1/21/2011

In this edition of the Nu’s Flash, I decided to take a very historical journey of our chapter. While perusing through the Sigma Nu national directory, I stumbled upon Beta Tau’s founding fathers. To this point, I had never even heard of our founding fathers. While I, like all Beta Taus, know the fraternity’s founding fathers (James Frank Hopkins, Greenfield Quarles, and James McIlvaine Riley), I had no idea who our very own chapter’s founding fathers were when they established the chapter as the first fraternity at NC State in 1895. I then decided to do some detective work to uncover our founding fathers. This extremely interesting, and somewhat long, article comes from the 13th volume of the Delta of Sigma Nu Fraternity. The article gives the full history of our chapter’s beginnings and founding fathers. It reveals how important and influential our members have been since the beginning and how we may actually owe UNC (Psi Chapter) a favor or two with their help in the creation of our chapter. Just take a look at the picture of the founding fathers, located at the bottom of the article. You can not tell me that they were not having an awesome time, even during those strict Victorian-era days.

The Founding of Beta Tau

"On April 15th, 1895, the Glee, Mandolin, and Guitar Clubs of the University of North Carolina, gave their annual concert in the Academy of Music at Raleigh, N. C. Taking advantage of this, several members of Psi Chapter ran down to Raleigh and, on the night of the 15th, in a private parlor of the Park Hotel, instituted what is to be known for all time as Beta Tau Chapter of the Fraternity of Sigma Nu. The following seven men were instituted as charter members: Sydenham Brevard Alexander, Thomas Winslow Alexander, Thomas Martin Ashe, William Kearney Davis Jr., John Blakeley Howard, Charles Bolling Holladay, and Charles Pearson.

The establishment of a chapter of Sigma Nu here had long been talked of, and we, the charter members, feel very proud that at last we have succeeded, and have gotten that for which we wished so long.

The North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts is situated on the summit of a hill about two miles west of the Capital, and just outside of the corporate limits of Raleigh. The State Fair Ground is just beyond the college, and the electric cars from the city, passing every fifteen minutes, make West Raleigh, the beautiful little village that is growing up around the college, the most fashionable and popular suburb of Raleigh. The Campus, joining, as it does, the grounds of Raleigh’s most fashionable airing place, Pullen Park, makes the college site indeed a beautiful one. And all things combined, the beauty of the situation, the pleasant surrounding, and, above all, the fact that the College is situated well out of town and yet near enough to be virtually in it, make the situation approach near to an ideal one.

The College first opened its doors to students in October 1889, and each year the number of students grew a little larger, until last year, that being the sixth year of the College, 263 students registered. During the fifth year it was seen fit to introduce the study and practice of Military Science and Tactics, and last year the Military feature was completely organized and equipped. As the end of the fourth year of the College, that being the Commencement of 1893, nineteen men were graduated. In the class of ‘94 were eight men, with one member of the class of ‘93, who had studied another year to take an advance degree. The class of ‘95 numbered twenty-two men, and with them a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology took an advanced degree. The class of ‘96 now numbers only eleven, but in all human probability all of these will come back next year and graduate. When our chapter was installed, two of our men, Bros. Holladay and Pearson, were taking post graduate courses, but both of them withdrew before the year was finished.

The present outlook for the College is better than it has ever been before, and to be able to meet the demand next fall, a large dormitory is being erected. The College has not grown very rapidly, but it is slowly and surely advancing with a steady step and is building a reputation for herself on a solid rock foundation. The field work is rapidly widening and now the College offers four distinct courses, viz: The course in Agriculture; the course in Applied Science; the course in Mechanical Engineering; and the course in Civil and Electrical Engineering. All of these courses are very pliable, so that a man coming well prepared from another College can, by combining parts of several courses, get almost anything he wants. All students are compelled to take a very thorough course in English Grammar, Composition, and Literature, but, as yet, no other language is taught. A large and well stocked farm affords splendid opportunity for the study of Agriculture; the best equipped chemical department in the South furnishes unrivaled advantages for the study of Chemistry; completely equipped machine shops and drawing rooms give the students of Mechanical Engineering great advantages; while the course in Civil Engineering is inferior to none. Heretofore, the course in Mechanical and Civil Engineering have been under the same head, but this year they were disunited and a separate chair for each established, so now both are much more complete than ever before. As yet little has been done in the Electrical department, but this summer the laboratories, etc., will be fitted up and complete apparatus put in, so that next year will start a thorough course in Electrical Engineering.

During the last scholastic year the Greek letter fraternities first made their appearance among us. In the fall of ‘94 a chapter of Pi Kappa Phi was established and then in the spring of ‘95 our chapter of Sigma Nu was installed. At present only these two exist here. The Pi Kappa Phi took everything in the class of ‘95 except our Bro. Davis, and in him we took a large part of the brain and all the oratory of the class. Now that the Seniors are gone, our esteemed rival has not much to be proud of, but our best material is in the lower classes, and we hope to carry everything next year. Although Pi Kappa Phi has more than twice our number, yet we will fight to “count her for game.”

The honors of College life have fallen thickly among us, and to show you what we have done in the past, without any fraternity to work for, so you may form an idea of what the Beta Tau of the future will be, I enumerate as follows:

Bro. Sid Alexander entered the Freshman class in 1894, but soon won his way, over many a hard-fought field, to quarter-back on the foot-ball team, and at Commencement this spring he was one of the marshals from the Pullen Society.

Bro. Tom Alexander, being a little light of weight for foot-ball and a little light of pocket for marshal at Commencement, was to win his laurels in other fields, and as leader of the Glee Club and manager of the minstrel show he won as much fame for himself and the Fraternity as when he spun around Park Avenue on his wheel and broke the record of College wheelmen—and the heart of a fair young spectator.

Bro. Ashe, though he is not yet full of years, is, nevertheless, full of honors, and has always taken a lead in College life. He was captain of the second eleven in 1892, manager of the base-ball team in 1893, won the debater's medal at the public debate of the Leazar Literary Society in 1893 was president of his Society, and represented the Leazar Society in the Inter Collegiate Debate at Morehead City in June, 1894.

Bro. Davis has won us honor in all spheres of College life. He was manager of the foot-ball team, left field on the base-ball team two seasons, president of the Y. M. C A., two terms, first lieutenant of Company B., class orator at Commencement, 1895, and represented the Pullen Literary Society at the Inter Collegiate Oratorical Contest at Morehead City June, 1895.

Bro. Howard was manager of the base-ball team two seasons; manager of the foot-ball team for 1895; won debater’s medal at public debate of the Pullen Society, Feb. 1895; was second sergeant of Company C. 1896, and stands now at the head of his class.

Bro. Holladay was captain and first-base on base-ball team, ‘92 and ‘93; right-field on base-ball team ‘94 and ‘95; and was Chief Marshall at Commencement, 1893.

Bro. Pearson was manager of foot-ball team, ‘93, assistant captain and manager of foot-ball team ‘94, played left tackle on foot-ball team two seasons, was captain of Company A. in ‘94, class orator at Commencement 1894, and graduated at the head of his class.

Bro Whitaker has won great laurels in Athletics, having been captain and half back on foot-ball team two seasons, and centre field on base-ball team two seasons. He was also one of the marshals from the Pullen Society, at Commencement, 1896.

Bros. Lamb, Gwyn and Baker are our “little fellows,” who have not had time to win renown as yet, but from whom we expect great things in the future.

Bro. Gwyn stands well up towards the head of his class and Bros. Baker and Lamb are becoming great tennis players, so look out for them next year.

We use as our Chapter house a magnificent old residence situated in a large grove near the College. On the night of the 24th of May the Chapter gave a tea at its hall, in honor of Brother Victor H. Boyden, of Psi Chapter. - June 30, '95. John Howard."

<img title="The Park Hotel - 223 S.
Nu's Flash 1/15/2011

Happy New Year! In this edition of the Nu's Flash, I have two pieces of important information. First off, the brothers of Sigma Nu are willing and ready to start recruitment for Spring Rush 2011! Recruitment Chairman and Brother Christopher Brenton has planned a variety of events that are poised to attract numerous quality gentlemen to the Legion of Honor. The full list of Rush events and times are posted in thie SPRING RUSH 2011 tab on this website. Alumni, keep in mind that there is a scheduled Brother and Alumni Meet and Greet from 6-9 pm on February 3rd. More details on that event and Rush in general will be forthcoming.

Secondly, I would like to draw attention back to one of the previous Nu’s Flashes dated 11/28/2010. Recently, Beta Tau alumni Monroe Holland "Buz" Phillips Jr. (Beta Tau 634), was able to fill me in on the story for the second picture of the three in that particular Nu's Flash. According to Buz, the picture depicts "the float that we made for homecoming in the fall of 1962. State was playing Virginia and at that time a lingerie manufacturer, Maidenform, was running an advertising campaign for brassieres that was 'I dreamed I did such and such in my Maidenform bra.' Our homecoming float was titled 'I dreamed we beat Virginia in my Maidenform bra' and the woman on the float certainly emphasizes the bra as she is reclined in bed. The photo itself was taken in the back yard of the house at 1620 Hillsborough Street. We won the homecoming prize for best float." The people thought to be in the photo are Tommy Benton (top left, BT 622), Ken Kearns (top right, BT 620), Ray Smith (bottom left, BT 629), and Mike Pope (bottom right, BT 628). That sweet Chevy on the right belonged to Ken Kearns. This just goes to show that Beta Tau really has dominated for decades. The chapter would like to thank Buz for this incredibly awesome story. Below is the picture being discussed.

Nu's Flash 12/14/2010

In this edition of the Nu's Flash, I wanted to redirect the attention of the chapter and alumni to the building of the Beta Tau chapter house. The chapter is deeply thankful for the numerous brothers and alumni who have already made great contributions both financially and logistically in the house-building effort. Beta Tau has been blessed with some of the most prominent and respected alumni not only on this campus, but in the nation as well. Hand in hand, active brothers and alumni must work together to see that our long-term goal of completing the house is completed in due time.

The Beta Tau chapter of Sigma Nu will always be recognized as the first fraternity at NC State. Since that time, over 1300 men have enjoyed the benefits of being a Sigma Nu brother. Most of those 1300 brothers also enjoyed the benefits of living in a chapter house. The fraternity house is the lifeline of a fraternity. It is not only a place to call home, but it is also a social outlet, recruitment tool, alumni hangout, and a significant piece of history on a college campus. In order to renew interest in the chapter house project, I wanted to show some artist renderings from the Gontram Architecture website. Chief architect and brother Eddie Gontram is heading the project and has created these pictures that give a first glimpse into what the future of the Beta Tau chapter could be. The following graphics depict the future plans for the lobby, alumni room, and model bedroom of the chapter house.

Now you can't tell me that these pictures don't look awesome. Can't you see yourself just hanging out in the lobby and talking about some of those legendary Beta Tau stories and memories? What about watching Animal House on the big screen tv in the alumni room? We need to make this happen, not just for alumni or current brothers, but for all of the future Sigma Nu's of the Beta Tau chapter. Let's make some more NCSU history and be the first fraternity on the the new Greek village! More information about the current progress of the chapter house project will be posted to the Beta Tau Chapter House tab very soon.

Until next time,

Nu's Flash 11/28/2010

After recently being elected historian of the Beta Tau chapter, I have suddenly become very curious of the chapter’s history and presence at NC State. While perusing through the Historical State website, I stumbled upon three very cool Beta Tau pictures of the past. If you are in the picture and can delineate on exactly the details of the picture, please email me at rrmaclat@ncsu.edu so I can be sure to preserve this piece of chapter history in writing. The following are the pictures, their captions on the Historical State website, and my thoughts.

The caption reads “Two Sigma Nu members and two other students working on a homecoming float” with a 1962 date.

I think this picture is extremely cool not only because of the sweet cars in the background, but also because it depicts the strong NCSU tradition of Homecoming. With Beta Tau’s recent win in Homecoming 2010: No Wake Zone, I can say with full certainty that the chapter today cares for Homecoming as much as it did in this 1962 picture.

The caption reads “Sigma Nu fraternity members jogging while one dribbles a basketball” with a 1970 date.

For me, this picture brings up a lot more questions than answers. For starters, why are the Sigma Nu members dressed up in suits? Why is there a man jogging with what looks like a torch? Was this a marathon through campus? While this picture does bring up a lot of interesting questions, I know that whatever is going on in the picture probably beat going to class that day!

The caption reads “Sigma Nu fraternity group portrait” with a 1980 date.

This is probably my favorite picture of all. I think this picture accurately depicts the bonds of brotherhood. The photo is reminiscent of Animal House and shows some of the “fratty” fashion of the day. For instance, notice (from left to right) the short shorts, the cowboy hat, and the stylish trench coat. This picture really does prove that Beta Tau has always had some of the best dressed guys on campus.

As we move on into the future, it always helps to look back at the past. We should think back to our successes and failures and find out how they have contributed to our chapter’s current state. As the newly-elected Historian, I am dedicated to unraveling these stories from days gone by and putting the pieces together to form an image of what Beta Tau has become in the last 115 years.

Nu's Flash 11/13/2010

In this edition of the Nu’s Flash, Beta Tau has several huge accomplishments and stories to announce:

To begin with, Sigma Nu and sorority Delta Gamma WON FIRST PLACE OVERALL in NCSU’s Homecoming 2010: No Wake Zone! In only their second year together, the pair came out in force and participated all week in numerous attendance-based campus events. The duo improved on their third place finish from last year, trumping the incumbent Student Wolfpack Club by a small margin. This victory will not only add another accomplishment to the chapter’s already long list, but it will also put the chapter into contention for NCSU’s Fraternity of the Year Award in 2011. Beta Tau would like to thank the ladies of Delta Gamma and Homecoming Chairman Taylor Moseley for their hard work and dedication throughout this huge undertaking.

In other news, Beta Tau would like to congratulate all of the newly-elected executive officers including: Taylor Moseley (Eminent Commander), Philip Misklow (Lieutenant Commander), Luke Pyle (Treasurer), Chris Allen (Recorder), Christopher Brenton (Recruitment Chairman), and Elias Ballew (Candidate Marshal). The newly-elected and re-elected brothers will lead Beta Tau into what hopefully will be the most successful and productive year in chapter history.

In addition to the new officers, Beta Tau will also be congratulating and welcoming eleven new brothers into the chapter this Sunday, November 14th. The men will complete their candidacy and become full-fledged Knights. A majority of the chapter and several alumni are planning to attend a day that marks the beginning of a new chapter in Beta Tau history. After the ceremony, everybody is welcome to come celebrate at the Carolina Ale House in Cary.

Lastly, the brothers of Sigma Nu held a semi-formal last Thursday, November 4th at Rum Runners in downtown Raleigh. Everyone stayed safe and had a great time. Beta Tau would like to thank Social Chairman Brian Cerrito for orchestrating such a fun and successful event.

Nu's Flash 10/25/2010

The men of Beta Tau have many new things to report in this edition of the Nu's Flash. For starters, Beta Tau's first legitimate mixer of the year with the newly colonized Kappa Delta sorority chapter was a huge hit. Sigma Nu held the mixer this past Thursday night at Fosters American Grille in Cameron Village. The theme was "Beauty and the Geek" and proved to be extremely fun and successful. The men of Sigma Nu would like to thank Kappa Delta for a great evening and would love to continue a regular social schedule with the ladies of Kappa Delta.

On October 25th, Beta Tau attended the Order of Omega Awards and Standards of Excellence Awards in Stewart Theatre. Sigma Nu should be very proud of their big showing. Individual awards went to brothers Brian Holman and JT Steed for being selected NC State Fraternity Senior Diamond and Fraternity President of the Year respectively. In terms of the collective chapter, Beta Tau took home awards for demonstrated excellence in Council Involvement, Educational Programming, and Service and Philanthropy! You can pretty much say Beta Tau is on a roll!

Beta Tau is pleased to announce the induction of five brothers into the Order of Omega including Christopher Brenton, Chris Boemermann, Dre Antono, Andrew Naples, and Brian Cerrito. The Order of Omega is a co-ed Greek Leadership Honor Society that recognizes members for leadership, academics and community service. Beta Tau brother and current president of Order of Omega, Gerald Fowler, introduced all of the new initiates at the Order of Omega Awards.

Sigma Nu has continued its domination of sorority philanthropy events so far this Fall. The men of Beta Tau recently won Delta Gamma's annual cornhole tournament and placed third in Delta Delta Delta's (Tri Delt) annual chili cooking contest. It seems like wherever Beta Tau goes, success follows. Coincidence? I think not.

Until next time,

Nu's Flash 10/3/2010

It's now Fall time and that can only mean one thing: Turtle Tug. For the third year in a row, Sigma Nu has repeated (Threepeated) as Delta Zeta's annual Turtle Tug champions. Turtle Tug is a philanthropy tug-of-war contest conducted across campuses by both sororities and fraternities to raise money for Delta Zeta's The Painted Turtle and their local hearing and speech foundation. Trophies and prizes are given to the winning teams and the most spirited team. Brother James Comstock was reported to have reduced numerous opponents to tears as he relentlessly pulled the rope while Brother Spencer Stultz stood almost as firm as the Sigma Nu Rock at headquarters while anchoring the rope. Sigma Nu looks forward to this event each year and wishes to continue its reign of dominance. With this win, the chapter's sight is now directed towards "threepeating" in Delta Gamma's Anchor Splash in 2011.

Sigma Nu is looking forward to teaming up with Delta Gamma again this year for Homecoming. Brother Taylor Moseley will serve as the Homecoming Chairman and will be responsible for guiding the candidate class to bring home a Homecoming victory. Sigma Nu and Delta Gamma look to improve on their third place finish in Homecoming from last year.

In other news, Brother Mateo Gonzalez was appointed Taligate Chairman. Mateo will be responsible for organizing and conducting the remainder or Sigma Nu's tailgates this football season. With Mateo's help, Beta Tau's tailgate will be among the best on fraternity row on gamedays.

Beta Tau is also looking forward to a mixer with the newly-colonized chapter of Kappa Delta. With 132 girls, Beta Tau likes the potential girl-to-guy ratio a mixer could have.

Nu's Flash 9/24/2010

This week, the men of Beta Tau participated in NCSU's Shack-A-Thon. Brother Luke Pyle took charge of the venture for Sigma Nu and collaborated with sorority Delta Gamma, fraternity Chi Psi, and engineering fraternity Theta Tau to help raise money for Habitat for Humanity. More than 20 clubs signed up and built 16 shacks to raise money for a Habitat for Humanity House. Shacks were manned 24/7 in the Brickyard hoping to raise more than the $19,000 record set last year.

With NCSU football away at Georgia Tech this weekend, brothers are excited to host a brotherhood event at fraternity favorite Sammy's Tap and Grill on Avent Ferry Road. Beta Tau hopes that the combination of good food and brotherhood will be enough to bring the Wolfpack another victory and a 4-0 start to the season.

Junior and Senior brothers met on Thursday night to kick off their first LEAD phase III session of the year. LEAD chairman Christopher Brenton is looking forward to another great year and is constantly improving an already award-winning LEAD program.

In other news, the fraternity would like to congratulate candidate Josh Hamilton for being elected the Fall 2010 Candidate Class President. Candidate Hamilton will lead a group of 14 other candidates on their quest to become full-blown Knights at the end of the semester.

Until next time,

Welcome to the first edition of the Nu's Flash. The Nu's Flash, a play on words (Nu's=News), is a short blurb that serves as a fast at-a-glance source for information on all things Beta Tau. Whether you are a current member, alumni, or potential candidate, the Nu's Flash is designed to keep you updated with all the current news of the chapter. If you wish to post an update or piece of information, please contact me (Ryan MacLatchie: Beta Tau 1357) at rrmaclat@ncsu.edu.

The men of Beta Tau are back from what proved to be one of the hottest and fun summers to date. After undergoing an innovative and revamped Rush under recruitment chair Zach Harris, the men of Beta Tau have once again proven that they are among the best fraternities at North Carolina State University. Along with what has become a Rush staple event, dinner at Sammy's Tap and Grill, Harris included events such as a trip to a Durham Bulls Game, a cookout at the future fraternity house site, and a dinner at Jimmy V's Steakhouse. With a current count of thirteen quality men, Beta Tau is pleased to usher in a group that looks to continue on the fraternity's long tradition of excellence. As a part of the candidate process, the new recruits will take their traditional trip up to headquarters in the coming weeks.

In other news, the men of Beta Tau are looking forward to the current football season. This year, Sigma Nu is stepping up their game when it comes to tailgating at Carter Finley on game day. With the grill hot, the beverages cold, and the music rockin', tailgating never looked or sounded so good.

Lastly, the chapter has voted to switch chapter meetings from Monday nights at 7pm to Sunday nights at 7pm. This move increases the amount of brothers who are able to attend chapter who otherwise couldn't due to class or work conflicts.

-Love, Honor, Truth
